Abstract

We present deep CCD images, spectrophotometry, and astrometry of the variable star FY Awuilae, which is located within the error box of the 1979 March 31 gamma-ray burst event. Deep red CCD images reveal that FY Aql is surrounded by a faint, extended nebulosity centred of the variable star. Spectrophotometry of FY Aql and its nebulosity suggests that it is an M4e III Mira variable star embedded in an extended reflection nebula. We argue that there is a present no compelling observational evidence to suggest that this system is the optical counterpart of the 1979 March 31 gamma-ray burst.
