Creating Partnerships with Correctional Facilities: Extension Tools and Strategies for Financial Education

Abstract

Extension professionals are meeting financial literacy needs of inmates by creating partnerships with the Department of Corrections. Classes and workshops are being held in county jails and state prisons to provide incarcerated individuals a secure financial future upon release by teaching them financial literacy skills, thereby reducing recidivism rates. This article outlines tools and strategies used to create a partnership with correctional facilities such as protecting the inmates by writing an Institutional Review Board (IRB), submitting a proposal to the jail/prions coordinators, selecting curricula, recruitment, and best practices.
