Livestock Ponds in South Carolina

This article addresses various issues in the use of farm ponds for watering livestock. Key points include pond design and permit requirements for construction, water quantity needs, and management practices to preserve the water quality for the livestock, aquatic communities, wildlife, and users downstream. Highlighted best management practices include limiting direct livestock access to the pond by directing the water to troughs and proper forage fertilization and grazing methods to minimize nutrient runoff and erosion.
