Abstract

The purpose of this project is to present a glimpse into human life in Counrtenay Mill Village, Newry, South Carolina during the early Twentieth Century. It is not a "objective, impartial, academic" study of life in a mill village. It is a selected written interpretation taken primarily from taped interviews with people who lived in Newry, containing their recollections of life in the village. An indexed outline of the tapes, useful for reference, further research, and interpration is included in the paper. Emphasis is placed on recording the personal opinions, feelings, and recollections of the people interviewed without rigorous historical critical evaluation and comment. Topic considered include family life, education, social life, health, religion, recreation, and how people made a living. Descriptions of the village itself, its people, buildings and artifacts, are also included.
