Abstract

A virtual panel discussion on the book “The Black Librarian in America: Reflections, Resistance and Reawakening” will focus on Black library history, collective and individual identity and moving forward today as the American Library Association (ALA) commemorates the 50th anniversary of its Black Caucus (BCALA). The discussion will take place on Zoom on Wednesday, June 29, at 6 p.m.

The discussion will feature the book’s editors:

• Shauntee Burns-Simpson, president of the BCALA and associate director of school support and outreach for the New York Public Library
• Nichelle M. Hayes, president-elect of BCALA and director of the Center for Black Literature and Culture at the Indianapolis Public Library
• Ana Ndumu, assistant professor of information studies at the University of Maryland College Park
• Shaundra Walker, library director at Georgia College.

The book is the latest edition of the BCALA’s “Black Librarian in America” book series and is the first edition to be edited entirely by Black women. The book is organized around four primary themes – Black librarian history, celebrating collective and individual identity and moving forward through activism, anti-racism and allyship.
